Terrible Two's

Well Ella has definitely hit the terrible two's. She is really challenging us these days. She doesn't want to nap or go to bed and is not phased by the notty spot or taking away her prized possessions, or anything we throw at her (not literally). It can be really frustrating. How do you discipline a child who isn't bothered by these things?
I have some great news, I finally found out that my CEA level from a week or so ago was 2.7 which is very close if not in the normal range, depending on who you ask. This is incredible news, I can't wait to tell Dr. Foster when I go back up on monday and see what he has to say. I also want to recheck with Dr. McKittrick, to see if I still need to do chemo right away. Probably so, but I can still have wishful thinking! That doesn't necessarily mean I am out of the clear or in remission, the CEA doesn't tell us everything but that is still great that it is that low!!!! WEEEEEE. Thank you all for the prayers, please keep them coming, they seem to be working!!
It is once again a dreary day here. It was nice for a couple of days and now it is cloudy, rain yesterday and cold today. Ugh. No outside activities for us today. I am trying to get Ella down for a nap. I actually held the door shut for awhile, she is now in her room talking, but of course not sleeping. She gave up on the door. Is that too cruel? I felt a bit guilty but I don't know how else to keep her in her room for some down time. I know she is tired, she even told me this morning, she's been tired. Anyway, everything else is pretty good here. Doug is going to take his Nani back to her hometown where she is going to move into an apartment. I know this has to be very difficult going home without your husband. Especially after that many years but I know she will adjust in time and do well on her own! So Doug will be helping out with the move this weekend and I will be here with Ella so she can go to my nephew, Keaton's birthday party saturday. Then my mom and I leave for Omaha sometime Sunday because it will be an earllllly morning Monday for us, I have to be at the hospital early for my filter to come out. Oh, to answer one of the questions... a filter is a little umbrella like device they placed in vena cava to prevent clots from going to my heart and my lungs while i had surgery since I was off my blood thinner for surgery. They will take this out and I will again get back on my Coumadin which I will probably be on the rest of my life.
I hope everyone has a great weekend! I will let you know how things go Monday after I talk to Dr. Foster and get back to KC. Just in time to start chemo on Tuesday. What a week it will be.
I feel as if there was another question someone had for me that I have meant to answer but I can't think of it right now. Oh, it was a comment one of my neighbors sent. Thank you for emailing me, even if you haven't met me I still appreciate your thoughts and concern. You don't have to worry about what to say around me, anything is fine. I know everyone means well and really can't say much wrong. I would love to meet more of you out there, so please if you do pass by me, I would love it if you say hi.
That is all... I hope I haven't lost a lot of you from reading since I haven't been as committed to blogging lately. I finally got through all my emails from the time of surgery and thank you all for all your wonderful well wishes and comments. I am healing very well and hope to be impress Dr. Foster by how well I have done. Things haven't been to exciting lately, I know but please hang in there with me! I continue to need all your support and you have mine if you ever need it! You can always email me personally and chat. Live, laugh, love, shawndra
PS. Ella just came out of her room (no nap yet) and now has pantyhose on... how hilarious. She took her pants off and put on pantyhose while she was in her room. Oh, ya gotta love her! I just wish she wasn't so difficult these days.

Hi, Shawndra. After the last few weeks you've had, "not too exciting" is awesome!! What great news about your CEA!! I'm thrilled for you. You're sure to impress you doc next week, no doubt. And the chemo....well, as horrible as the side effects are, remember they are temporary. You know better than I, but I'm sure it's hard to remember that when you feel so crummy. My sister just had her first round of chemo this week, so I'm seeing first hand what you've expressed in your blogs. Thank you for sharing your experience, it's really taught me a little more what to expect with my sis. I've spoken about you often with her. You're our inspirational success story!! Stay tough!! You WILL get through this!!

Very sincerely,
Tricia (CMH pal)

Shawndra-

Great news about your CEA Level. We hope all your prayers are answered soon! You are a wonderful Mommy! Children have a way of making us angry one minute and laughing the next. I truly believe having Mason and Madison. Madison is the difficult one. I just think it is a "Girl" thing. Don't get me wrong "Boys" can be handful too! Just remember you are a wonderful Mommy!!! Our thoughts and Prayers are with you and your family! Keep Believing!!!

So happy to hear your CEA level has come down. I'm jumping up & down in excitement for you...well only in my mind. I don't think Andrea would be too happy with me if I was jumping around after doing so well with her help in PT for my back :) I will pray that things with Ella start going smoother. I don't have kids but I am sure this is normal behavior for her age...you would think we would know this being peds RN's, LOL!! I hope the weather gets better this weekend and you are able to go out and enjoy the sun. Have fun at Keatons b-day party & have a safe trip on Sunday. I will be thinking of you as you have your filter removed. And in no way ever think your readers have given up on you since you haven't been blogging much lately....no news is good news right?!?!? I do however enjoy reading the funny things Ella does and the moments you are enjoying with her & Doug. Thank you for sahring your life with us. Have a great weekend Shawndra. Until next time, much love and prayers,
Melody

Yeah Shawndra! So glad to hear about your levels! Keep it going! This sounds cruel but consider turning the lock on Ella's door around. Worked for me, my daughter would finally fall asleep once she realized it wasn't a game anymore and she couldn't get the door open. Have a great weekend and a safe trip!

Hi Shawndra,

I agree with one of the other posters: a week of no news is fantastic news at this point!

(Though I must say that the CEA level news was a bit more than fantastic, to say the least...)

Your body must be so tired by now; please know that we are here to help buoy your spirit when your body feels like its had too much.

Having a child in the throes of the terrible two's is enough to exhaust ANYONE! Especially when that two year old is as rambunctious and determined as your little Punks :) (My money is on you winning the Battle of the Nap, by the way.)

Your little Ella is blessed to have such wonderful parents and family around her. She'll be better than just fine, Shawndra. I happen not to harbor any resentment for the naps I was forced to take as a child.

As always, you're in our thoughts and prayers. Reading your Friday news made my weekend that much better. Prayer, positive thoughts and the simple love humans should have for one another is more powerful than any of us know. You are proof.

Warmest hugs to you and little Ella,

jg

Oh Shawndra having that low of a CEA is amazing! That is wonderful news!!
About the terribel two's...I know one mistake I made with my first son was putting in a twin bed too early. I should have left in in there until he went to school! LOL! Kidding of course, but I think they think they are free when taken out of the crib and then they start exploring more that we want them to yet! Maybe this is having the same impact as my son? My second son I kept in the crib until he was 3 and he continued to take naps and to sleep good, unlike the first son inwhich we put him in his big boy bed at 2. This might be some of the problem...?

Sue

PS can you tell I am having terrible chemo brain??? I hope you can understand what I was trying to say..gezzzz...I hate this!

FANTASTIC NEWS!!! Forget the dreary weather - the sun was shining in my life today - I got to see your smiling face and hear your great news!
Good luck in Omaha. I'm sure you will make your surgeon's day, as well. Safe travels - I will check on you soon.

Love always, d

I am so glad about your good news. Good luck on Monday with Dr. Foster. Ella is a typical two-year old. It's just somthing you have to get through, but it does pass.

Shawndra,

I learned a trick with the 2 year old napping situation. I put up a baby gate in the door frame. Put the "bar adjuster" facing outward in the hallway. This is so you don't give Miss Ella a "leg up". This way they can "see" you, but they can't get out. If you have to, you can even place the baby gate a few inches up off of the ground...to increase the height.....This really worked for all of our kids....Hope this works!

Hi Shawndra,

So very, very glad to hear about your CEA number!! That is amazing, incredible news. I'm thrilled. You have been in my thoughts everyday...you know that not a day goes by that I don't think about you, and pray for you. I'm glad your recovery has gone so well, and I hope Dr. Foster has tons of great things to say on Monday!

I'm sorry you've been dealing with the terrible twos! Rest assured that Ella is TOTALLY normal, and that every child and parent goes through these phases. As they say, this too shall pass. And, in my opinion, 3 is the absolute best age ever, so just keep that in mind! haha. That doesn't help, I know! Hang in there...all the sweet stuff she does will help you get through the challenges!

I'll be praying for you on Monday, and in the coming week, as always. You are always close to my heart.

Prayers and love to you, my friend.

Michelle

Yea! I'm so happy to hear about your CEA level! That is great news!!! So, Connor has been doing the same thing and getting up out of bed whenever he wants, etc. I've been holding the door too sometimes and feel so guilty about it! With Peyton I used to get out the "doorknob lock" (baby proof doorknob thing), it really worked great. Anyways, I'm so happy for you, our prayers are working!
Love, Julie

YOU GO GIRL!!! Don't ever think people are not checking on you because I know for me, you are one of the first people I check on everyday to see how you are and I love reading your blog or just seeing your picture. My husband did the door thing with our son and that cured him so keep trying. He is 16 now and he seems to be fine, I don't think we damaged him too much. Ha. Have a safe trip and know that everyone is out here rooting for you and so pleased to see your progress. Remember my comment, I just have a feeling about you!!!!! You are gonna beat this thing. It is still there. Love ya. Melodie Chrisman

Hi, Shawndra! I have an almost-three-year-old, and we put one of those doorknob protectors on the inside of her door to keep her in her room. You can find them in the babyproofing aisle; if they're on the doorknob, the kids can't turn the knob and get out. Good luck! :)

Dearest Shawndra,

It was so nice to see you. The last time I flew into K. City it was for your wedding!!

Thank you so much for giving me some of your time to let me know Mom Shawndra and her cute little two year old girl.
She looks just like you.
Your Ella is such a cute little and very active girl.
May be you ask your Mom, and she'll remember you might have been like that , too???

It's sometimes easier to make them slow down, than if they are too shy and quiet!

Mom's talk!!!
You keep up your perseverance and enjoy those most spectacular test results.
A big step ahead.

I told the whole family and friend's about it already , and we'll keep you in our constant prayers, because you see..... IT WORKS!!

Only you can feel how hard this is to handle, and all of us think you're doing more than any one would do.

I hope you had a great Keaton's birthday party, and Ella did let you relax just enjoying to look at her playing and jumping around.

Have the best week ever, and keep on looking at the full part of the cup of all your experience, because
GOD has a purpose for you, and you know that.

Love,
Roswita

The "terrible" twos.....I remember a little red headed spitfire at two, "terrible" sometimes, but cute! I personally would take a bus load of two year olds over teenagers. Don't let that discourage you though, cause it too will pass.
I can't tell you how excited I am to hear about your CEA level! It has got to make you want to jump and shout! I am hoping that the visit with Dr Foster offers you even more great news.

Shawndra,

We all continue to pray for you!! Travel safe..Jill R

You CEA level is AWESOME...and I know Dr. M from the hospital I work at and he is so nice...what a great team of docs you have!

I turned Matthews lock around so he couldn't get out. It's not a horrible thing to do but when it's nap time it's nap time...or when he was in a serious time out...I meant business. :-) I recomment at least trying it.

Hope your trip went well. Can't wait to hear about it

Hang in there Shawndra, I have a terrible two year old too! Cute but stubborn!

It is always good to read your blog and see good news. Hope you have more to come. I don't miss the terrible twos, my daughter is six, but I am sure I will hit them again, my son is 13 months. We had to put Rach in a big girl bed as she climbed out of the crib, but it wasn't ever easy. A friend of mine told me to take her out shopping and let her pick out any pillowcase she wanted. I thought it was crazy, but it seemed to work. She really thought of it as her bed and she stayed in it better. However, she picked something sort of unusual and she still insists on having it on her pillow every night. It is in some sad shape. There is a reason they say to buy at least two of their favorite things. You will get through this and have some really fun stories to put in her baby book. Pictures too. Take care of yourself.
